Re: Drafting Standards and Procedures
It has come to my attention that our current station labeling is not per industry standards in some of our CAD drawings. Some of the concerns were that the station labels were confusing and could easily be misinterpreted or located incorrectly. The text was not close enough to the tick mark and the “plus symbol” in the label might be interpreted as the station location. There have been drawings done recently with very different looking labeling settings depending upon the CAD user and/or project directory. We have not formally defined a label standard for station labels to date.
Effective immediately, please insure that the following settings are used in ALL Lanc & Tully CAD drawings. NO deviations to these settings will be acceptable.

I am in the process of reworking the layer standards to better represent the proper line types and line weights for each layer. The current color scheme doesn’t seem to offer enough flexibility. I am thinking that we might be better off using more than the standard 8 colors we are currently using. This will make working in densely populated drawings easier and will help differentiate between different systems more quickly. I have been trying to avoid doing this. Changing a system that has been in place for a number of years is not a minor change and will have significant impact. I am looking at various ways to accomplish this without making the change so painful.
In the mean time, all roads should show a centerline and the line weight should be lighter than any utilities found in or along the roadway. The color green is a suggestion, at the moment, since the current colors used for utilities are either white or cyan. I will be more specific after I get the new color scheme defined.
· The Standard Textstyle now uses the Simplex font to increase readability. All textstyles should be checked and if the txt.shx font is being used, change it to simplex.shx
· 0.10” is the preferred minimum text size when measured on the finished plot. Under no circumstances should text be smaller than 0.08” high.
· The use of any font more complicated than simplex should be restricted to larger scale text such as View and Detail Titles or Title Blocks.
· All text overlaying any other objects should be moved to a clear area or the text should be masked if moving is impractical.
Your suggestions are an important part of deciding where and how we implement our company standards. I am making every effort to develop and implement standards that both reflect proper drafting practices and are easy to use. Your cooperation is required in pointing out areas where we are having difficulty as well as in strict adherence to company policies and procedures. Please refrain from “developing your own standards”. Copies of past drafting standard memos are available upon request. See me if you need to familiarize yourself with the current Lanc & Tully drafting standards.
Thank You,
Tom Hanley
